BDSM Origins of Wonder Woman

Recommended Posts

Wonder Woman is so iconic and I'm sure the subject of many fantasies, young and old. She represents female strength and power and looks damn good doing it! Little did I know that her creator was also a BDSM enthusiast!

I remember reading about this awhile back. In the 1970's TV series, Linda Carter (the actress who played Wonder Woman) often found herself tied up and  cleave-gagged or tape gagged by the bad guys. Each time, she managed to escape and get the proper revenge on her captors. Even at a young age, I found myself captivated by these scenes. Who knew?

It's so interesting how the slightest impressions in our youth can unknowingly become our fantasies as adults.

It's sort of related, Joe Shuster, who was one of the co-creators of Superman, did erotic art on the side.  His images resembled Superman (Clark Kent) and Wonder Woman.  His erotic art was compiled into a book and it's pretty neat.  Stan Lee wrote the intro.

Having seen the movie I wonder (ugh) if anyone else, like me, feels they have reacted in life like the Elizabeth Holloway Marston character.

It is interesting about comic book characters with fetish-inspired backgrounds.

I just finished reading Eric Stanton & the History of the Bizarre Underground where it briefly goes into Spider-Man's origins.  Erotic cartoonist Stanton shared a studio in NYC with Spider-Man and Doctor Strange co-creator Steve Ditko and, according to the book, there is some speculation on how much of an input Stanton had regarding Spider-Man's development.  This is especially in regards to Spider-Man's tight outfit and red mask resembling a bondage hood.

Stanton mentioned in an old interview that he didn't really contribute much to Spider-Man, but said that the idea of him shooting webs from his wrists was his idea.  Ditko denies that Stanton had anything to do with Spider-Man, and there is speculation that both he and Stanton downplayed his contributions.
