I still remember my first 'known' encounter with BDSM. It was during the summer of '95, a few weeks after my thirteenth birthday and we'd just gone from the cryptic CompuServe to the juggernaut of AOL (albeit still a year before they'd switch to their infamous flat fee). This was in the prehistoric days of search engines and when you went browsing the web you never knew what you were going to find.

 

And so it was that I chanced upon a BDSM story tucked away into some random homepage or another. The story was flat, the writing limp, and there were typos all over the place, but holy shit the world it depicted was beyond my imagination. Mistresses with live-in houseboys who scampered to-and-fro, taking care of errands and always listening for when they might be summoned. Failure to comply or lackluster service resulted in any array of punishments, but even more fascinating to me were the rewards for good behavior: serving as the ladies' spittoon, licking a Mistress's ass, or being promoted to the position of 'toilet' for the evening. 'What is all this?' I wondered. 'And why does it light up my brain like a fireworks spectacular?'

 

That day I discovered a deep, dark psychological rabbit hole and I've been going down it ever since. I found other stories and other sites, forums and message boards, DIY toys and online stores [oh, how I'll never forget my first far-too-large toy, the Rear Ender ;]. I started writing my own stories and exploring text-based roleplaying worlds themed all around BDSM. And, bit by bit, I even began sharing these interests with my partners.

 

Nineteen years later, my world is a different place. Responsibilities and obligations have crept up as they tend to do, and I've had to become more creative with how and when I indulge my inner kinkster. But the flame still burns bright and I'm still excited to learn more about the world of BDSM and, in turn, about myself.
