I mentioned this in another post, but it's worth repeating. The HBO series of "My Brilliant Friend" is an excellent adaptation of the novels. It is in Italian with subtitles but is better for it. .. the casting is great, all unknown Italian actors .. the actress who plays Lila, during her teenage years, is compelling.

Does Ms Zito really speak Italian? ... Such a beautiful language to simply listen to. My parents were Italian but never spoke it while raising us (except when they were mad) .. and i've always regretted not learning the language. I'm imagining a session where she only speaks/commands in Italian and my being severely punished and humiliated for not understanding .. the more i plead "non capisco" the the more i am slapped and punished for not doing what i'm told.. and she repeatedly threatens to "piscia su di te" or "sputo in bocca" whenever i open my mouth. ahh .. That's probably the best way to reflect on things like this.. never knowing of a possible bad ending is preferable to actually living through one... And we have the luxury of painting the unknown in the best colors possible. I'm guessing by your "Murray the K" reference in another post that we're of the same NYC generation, so we're both at that point in life where reflecting creeps in more often... Is anyone else enjoying the recent miniseries "My Brilliant Friend" on HBO as much as i am? It may not have been intended to, but it appears to be a story of a true Domme in the making. Lila',.. the very "brilliant friend" of the title, is one of the two main protagonists and, to me, could be a Mistress Rey or Zito at a young age .. dark, strong, supremely confident, and totally without fear. While reading the first novel in the series i got sucked into watching the miniseries, which is in Italian with sub-titles. The visual images and the casting of the young Lila' are terrific.. the casting is great throughout but you can't help but be drawn to her fierce character. The sub-titles are not at all distracting .. in fact they seem to make the story more compelling. I'm not a big fan of t.v. but i find this to be exceptional. From the web... "My Brilliant Friend" is the first in the series, and also the first to be adapted for television.
